(1915-2000) one of the most famous English football players of all time. He played on the wing (= as an attacking player along one side of the field) and was known for his skill at running past opponents with the ball and then passing it into the goal area. He is also remembered for having remained a professional player until the age of 50. He played for England 54 times and was the first football player to be made a knight (in 1965).
