a city and port on the south coast of Wales. It used to be an important port and a major centre of the Welsh coal, metal and shipbuilding industries. As these industries became less important towards the end of the 20th century the city was developed as a tourist centre. It is the nearest city to the Gower Peninsula and the Brecon Beacons. The city and its surrounding area are governed by a unitary authority. see also DVLA
