a US Navy victory on 5 August 1864 during the Civil War. The US sent 18 ships against 4 ships of the Confederate Navy in Mobile Bay at Mobile, Alabama. The bay was also protected by three forts (= strong military buildings for defence) and by containers filled with explosive (called 'torpedoes') that floated in the water. Admiral David Farragut led the successful US attack with the famous remark: ‘Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!’
