a British government organization, started in 1975, which encouraged companies, colleges, etc. to give the same opportunities to men and women. It also tried to make sure that men and women received the same pay for the same work. It had the power to enforce (= force people to obey) parts of the Sex Discrimination Act and the Equal Pay Act. In 2007 it became part of the new Equality and Human Rights Commission.
