the famous US bridge that connects San Francisco with Marin County, California, to the north. It is a suspension bridge (= bridge hanging from cables supported by towers at each end) and crosses the Golden Gate, the water between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It was completed in 1937, and the length of the central section is 4 200 feet/1 281 metres. The bridge takes four years to paint, and the work of painting it never stops.
