one of the main British political parties, in favour of some political and social change, but not extreme compare Conservative Party, Labour Party Culture The Liberal Democrats are the third largest British political party. The party was formed in 1988 when the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party joined together. In recent years it has been successful in local government elections as well as in by-elections and in 2010, under the leadership of Nick Clegg, it became part of a coalition government with the Conservatives. It argues in favour of proportional representation.
