a long bridge in New York City connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn. It is 4 260 feet/1 300 metres long, and one of the world's longest suspension bridges (= bridges that hang from steel cables supported by towers at each end). It is named after Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian who in 1524 was the first European to land on Staten Island. After the bridge was opened in 1964, many people began to buy homes on the island. compare George Washington Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge
