a very popular US film (1939) based on the children's book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) by Frank Baum (1856-1919). In the film a little girl called Dorothy, played by Judy Garland, is blown by a strong wind from her home in Kansas to the strange land of Oz. She has to defeat the Wicked Witch of the West in order to return home, and she does this with the help of the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and the Wizard of Oz himself. The film's best-known songs include Over the Rainbow, We're Off to See the Wizard and Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
