a Broadway musical play (1957) with music by Leonard Bernstein and words by Stephen Sondheim. The film version (1961) won several Oscars, including Best Picture. The story is a modern version of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet set in the tough 1950s West Side of New York's Manhattan. The songs include Maria, Tonight and There's a Place for Us.
