a very popular and successful BBC television comedy series (1980-5), which made fun of those involved in politics. The main characters are a government minister who is often not sure how to solve problems affecting his work and career, and a senior member of the Civil Service, Sir Humphrey Appleby, whose job is to advise him and who creates complicated plans for solving these problems and protecting his own position. In a later series, Yes, Prime Minister (1986-7), the minister had become prime minister.
