- (1878-1968) a US writer of novels and other books intended to improve conditions in society. The first and best known of these, The Jungle (1906), was about the terrible conditions in the Chicago meat industry, and it resulted in new laws being passed. One of his later novels, Dragon's Teeth (1942), won the Pulitzer Prize.
