  1. (1900-1990) a US composer of modern classical music, much of which uses traditional folk songs. His best-known works include the ballets Appalachian Spring (1944), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, and Billy the Kid (1939). He also wrote music for eight films and received an Oscar for The Heiress (1949).
