- the largest and most northern state of the US, connected to the other states by the Alaska Highway through Canada. It is sometimes called ‘the Last Frontier’ and produces a lot of oil. The land was bought from Russia in 1867 and Alaska became the 49th state in 1959. The capital city is Juneau, and the largest city is Anchorage.
