  1. (c. 1757-1804) one of America's Founding Fathers. He fought in the American Revolution, was one of the writers of The Federalist Papers, and established and led the Federalist Party. Hamilton was the first US Secretary of the Treasury (1789-95) and established the central Bank of the United States. He died after Vice-President Aaron Burr (1756-1836) wounded him in a duel .
