  1. (1855-1937) a rich US businessman who also served in the US government. He gave large amounts of money to help charities, museums, etc. He was Secretary of the Treasury (1921-31) and then US Ambassador to Britain (1932-3). In 1937 he gave his large art collection to establish the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
