  1. (1928-2016) an English writer who had a successful career writing about the history of art before she began writing novels in the 1980s. She wrote with intelligence and humour about middle-class people. Her best-known book, Hotel du Lac (1984), won the Booker Prize. Her later work includes Leaving Home (2005), and Strangers (2009).
