  1. (1907-83) a British spy who gave British secrets to the Soviet Union. He was a member of the group called the Cambridge spies, which also included Burgess, Maclean and Philby. He was a successful art historian, working for the Queen, who made him a knight. When in 1979 it was discovered that he was a spy, his knighthood was taken away from him.
