  1. (1858-1923) a British Conservative politician, born in Canada. After a successful business career he entered Parliament in 1900, becoming leader of the Conservative Party in 1911. He was Prime Minister from 1922 to 1923, but resigned because of poor health and was replaced by Stanley Baldwin.
