  1. a US film (1941), which many people think is one of the best ever made. Orson Welles wrote, produced and directed it and played the main character. He received an Oscar for 'Best Screenplay'. The story was based on the life of the rich US newspaper owner William Randolph Hearst, who tried to stop it being filmed. It showed Kane as a rich but immoral person who becomes sad and lonely in his old age.
