  1. (1734-1820) a famous American frontiersman. He crossed the Appalachian Mountains to explore and help in settling land that became Kentucky. He fought against native North American people and was twice captured by them. Later he was elected a representative to the Kentucky government. He became an American legend and is even mentioned in Byron's poem Don Juan.
