  1. (1894-1979) a US composer of film music. He was born in Russia and moved to the US in 1925. He won Oscars for High Noon, The High and the Mighty (1954) and The Old Man and the Sea (1958). His other films included It's a Wonderful Life, Friendly Persuasion (1956) and Giant (1956).
