  1. (1858-1928) an English suffragette leader. She established a political group, the Women's Social and Political Union, in 1903. Her influence on the campaign for women's right to vote made it more active and determined, and made her the most famous of the British suffragettes. She and her daughters Christabel (1880-1958) and Sylvia (1882-1960) were often put in prison for their actions.
