- Eugene Victor Debs (1855-1926) a US socialist politician and trade union leader. In 1893 he established the American Railway Union. He helped organize the Social Democratic Party of America in 1897 and was its candidate for US president five times from 1900 to 1920, even while in prison for opposing the government's decision to enter the First World War.
