  1. (of a lake, river, etc.) containing too many food substances that encourage plants to grow, which then kill animal life by using too much oxygen from the water
    Word Originearly 18th cent. (denoting ‘a medicine promoting good nutrition’): from Greek eutrophia, from eu ‘well’ + trephein ‘nourish’. The current sense dates from the 1930s.
