George du Maurier

- (1834-96) a cartoonist and writer of novels, the son of English and French parents. He is best known for his cartoons (= humorous drawings) in Punch about the social life of rich people. His novels were also very successful, and the name of one of his characters, Svengali in the novel Trilby, has become part of the English language. He was the grandfather of Daphne du Maurier.
