  1. (1683-1760) king of Great Britain and Ireland (1727-60). He was the only son of George I and, like his father, was not very interested in the government of Britain, allowing the development of the constitutional monarchy. He was, however, interested in the army, and fought against the French in the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). He was the last British king to lead his army into a battle.
