  1. (1895-1952) king of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1936-52). He was the second son of George V and became king after the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. He was greatly admired by the British people during the Second World War for staying in London when it was being bombed. He was the last British king to be called ' emperor' and the first head of the Commonwealth of Nations.
