  1. (1905-82) a US actor who often played calm, honest characters. He was a Hollywood star for more than 40 years in over 100 films, but won only one Oscar, for his last film, On Golden Pond (1981). His other successes included The Grapes of Wrath (1940) and Twelve Angry Men (1957). He was the father of the actors Jane Fonda and Peter Fonda.
