  1. (1841-1904) a Welsh journalist and explorer. He went to live in the US in 1859, and worked as a journalist for the New York Herald. In 1869 he was sent by his newspaper to find the explorer David Livingstone, who was thought to have become lost in Africa. Stanley found him at Ujiji in 1871, and is said to have greeted him with the words 'Dr Livingstone, I presume?’ Stanley continued to explore Africa until the early 1890s, and returned to live in Britain in 1892. He became a Member of Parliament (1895-1900) and was made a knight in 1899.
