  1. a US company that was the first to develop computers successfully. IBM computers created an international system that most other computers now relate to. The company began in 1911 as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company. It developed the first electric typewriter in the 1930s and the first computer in the 1950s. The first IBM personal computer (PC) was introduced in 1981.
