  1. a leading British college for the study of science, in South Kensington, London. It was established in 1907 as part of London University but became an independent institution in 2007. It offers courses in such subjects as science, medicine, engineering and business, as well as providing opportunities for scientific research. It also has its own nuclear reactor at its research station at Silwood Park, near Ascot.
