  1. (in the US) 20 January, officially the first day of a new President’s period of office
CultureThe Inauguration ceremonies for the new President, elected in November, are always on 20 January in Washington, DC (or on 21 January, if 20 January is a Sunday). The President says the Oath of Office, and the Vice-President does the same. The President then gives the Inaugural Address, a speech about his plans. This is followed by a long parade along Pennsylvania Avenue. In the evening there are official Inaugural balls (= formal events at which people dance).
