  1. (1896-1931) a US leader of a crime organization in New York in the 1920s. He was called 'Legs' because, when young, he was a fast runner and could run away quickly after stealing something. During Prohibition, he sold illegal alcohol and drugs. He killed a number of other criminal leaders but was himself murdered after he opposed a powerful one, 'Dutch' Schultz.
