  1. (1918-98) a US dancer and choreographer . He joined the New York City Ballet in 1949 and was later one of its Ballet Masters-in-Chief (1983-9). His ballets included Fancy Free (1944), which he helped to adapt for the film On the Town (1949). He was the choreographer for several Broadway musical plays, including The King and I (1951), West Side Story (1957) and Fiddler on the Roof (1964).
