  1. (1672-1719) an English writer and poet who was also active in politics. With his friend Richard Steele he started the Spectator. He wrote many poems and a tragic play, Cato (1713), but he is remembered mainly for his essays in the Spectator and the Tatler, written in a simple, direct style.
