  1. (1922-69) a US singer and actor. She began her acting career as a child actor at MGM. She became famous as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which she sang her best-known song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Her other films include Meet Me in St Louis (1944), A Star is Born (1954) and Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). Garland had problems with drugs, and she died by accident after taking too many. The singer and actor Liza Minnelli is her daughter.
