  1. the largest city in the US state of Missouri. It is connected to Kansas City, Kansas and was established at the beginning of the Santa Fe Trail. It is now a major industrial centre for the production of steel and vehicles. In the late 1920s, Kansas City became a centre for jazz. 'Count' Basie and 'Duke' Ellington both began their careers there.
  2. a city in eastern Kansas. It is connected to Kansas City, Missouri, but is only one third as large. The two cities are located where the Missouri River and Kansas River meet. This smaller city was originally formed from eight separate towns.
