  1. (1927-80) an English journalist and critic. He wrote mainly about the theatre, and was a strong supporter of the work of John Osborne. Tynan's stage show Oh, Calcutta! shocked some people with its sexual humour, and he is also remembered as the first person to say the word 'fuck' on British television (in 1965). From 1963 to 1969 he was literary manager of the National Theatre.
