  1. (1922-95) an English writer and poet . His most famous book is the comic novel Lucky Jim (1954). In 1986 he won the Booker Prize with The Old Devils. Most of his novels are angry but humorous attacks on aspects of modern life. He was the father of Martin Amis and was made a knight in 1990.
