- a US freeway in south-eastern Louisiana which is built over water. It is 25 miles/40 kilometres long and opened in 1957. New Orleans is at its southern end. The shallow saltwater Lake Pontchartrain is close to the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 625 square miles/1 619 square kilometres.
