- a city in Lancashire, England, on the River Lune. John of Gaunt became Duke of Lancaster in 1362, and since 1399 the Duchy of Lancaster has been a possession of the British Crown. The Lancastrians in the Wars of the Roses were supporters of the royal house descended from John of Gaunt.
