  1. (1888-1949) a US singer of the blues and folk music who also played the guitar. His real name was Huddie Ledbetter. He was in prison three times between 1918 and 1939, once for murder, before achieving success as a singer. He had a powerful voice, and his hits included Rock Island Line, How Long Blues and Goodnight, Irene.
