  1. born William Richard Morris (1877-1963) an English businessman who was the first person in Britain to mass-produce cars (= make them in large quantities by mechanical processes). He started his business repairing bicycles in Oxford, and soon moved into making bicycles and then cars. The Morris car company was very successful and Morris himself became very rich. He gave a lot of his money to hospitals and charities and also to Oxford University, where Nuffield College was named after him. see also MG, Morris Minor
