- Louis Burt Mayer (1885-1957) one of the people who established the US film company MGM in 1924. As head of the company (until 1951) he became one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. He also helped to create the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and received a special Oscar in 1950. Mayer was born in Russia.
