  1. (1892-1972) an English comedy actor. She is best remembered for playing rather eccentric older women, e.g. in the film versions of Blithe Spirit (1945) and The Importance of Being Earnest (1952). She also played the part of Miss Marple in several film versions of the novels of Agatha Christie. She was made a dame in 1967.
