  1. a town on the northern coast of Kent, England. It is popular for its beaches, and was traditionally a place where people from London went for bank holidays or family holidays. In Margate in 1835 the Shell Grotto was discovered, an underground chamber and passage decorated with Egyptian and Indian designs using over 50 different kinds of shell. It is not known when it was made.
