- (1918-2006) a US writer of crime stories who created the tough private detective Mike Hammer. When the stories first appeared in the late 1940s many people were shocked by the amount of sex and violence in them, but they have been very successful and many have been made into films. They include I, the Jury (1947), My Gun Is Quick (1950) and Kiss Me Deadly (1952).
