  1. a novel about the future, written in 1948 by George Orwell. The main character, Winston Smith, dares to think his own thoughts and fall in love in a society ruled by 'the Party', which tells everyone what they must think and do. The Party is led by Big Brother, who may not even exist, and everywhere there are pictures of him, with the words ‘Big Brother is watching you’. The book was very successful, and introduced several new ideas and words into the language, including Big Brother, the Thought Police, Newspeak and doublethink. Although 1984 is now in the past, it is still sometimes used to refer to some frightening future world.
