  1. a northern central US state on the Canadian border, also called the Sioux State and the Peace Garden State. The largest city is Fargo, and the capital city is Bismarck. Most of North Dakota was part of the Louisiana Purchase, and Britain gave the rest in 1818. The state is known for its farming: over 90% of its area is used for this purpose. Its products include wheat, beans, sunflowers, pigs and cattle. It also produces coal, oil and gas. Tourist attractions include the International Peace Garden on the US–Canadian border, Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the badlands.
