  1. (c. 1730-74) an Irish writer of plays, novels and poetry. His best-known works are the play She Stoops to Conquer and the novel The Vicar of Wakefield. He was a close friend of Samuel Johnson and one of the group of writers living in 18th-century London known as the Club.
